This project was undertaken as one half of former design studio, Passport.

Non-Fiction is a biannual journal by Open City Documentary Festival. The publication creates a space for considered, critical creative-writing on non-fiction and features contributions in response to moving image, audio or cross-media, both contemporary and historical.

We were asked to create the core identity for the journal as well as ongoing design of the editorial.  The Non-Fiction logo visually reflects moving image, achieved through cropped and repeated letterforms. We used clean, restrained typography in the branding to provide a suitably neutral tone to accommodate the wide variety of subject matter it has to sit alongside.

The wider identity focuses on ensuring a number of different perspectives and tones of voice can be communicated; established through the use of a varied but sober typographic palette in combination with unorthodox and unusual layouts. A super-heavyweight typeface contrasted against a delicate serif creates strong aesthetic tension.
